How Concrete Is Prepared for Staining
Understand the work that happens before the color goes down. Discuss old coatings, contamination and repairs with the installer so the preparation is included in your quote.

Content updated
Preparation determines whether the selected color system can work on the existing slab. This is a planning checklist for the assessment and quote, not a universal chemical or grinding recipe.
Identify the surface history
Record prior paint, sealer, curing products, adhesive, oil, and repairs where known. If the history is unknown, say so. Ask for testing appropriate to the proposed system instead of assuming that a surface that looks clean is ready.
Separate defects from appearance
Cracks, movement, moisture, and drainage concerns need investigation before decorative work. A transparent finish may highlight patches rather than hide them. Decide whether retaining that character fits the design goal.
Require a representative sample
The sample should use the intended preparation, color, and sealer. Include a difficult area where possible. Record what the sample demonstrates and what remains uncertain across the larger slab.
Plan the occupied space
Ask about dust capture, ventilation, masking, waste handling, and access during work. For an interior project, agree on room phasing and return-to-use instructions. For a patio, confirm how preparation water and debris will be contained.
